HERE'S HOW TO GET YOUR BUTT IN SHAPE LIKE AN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST SKATER
POSTED BY ANGIE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2015

It’s been quite a while since Tara Lipinski won a gold medal — almost 20 years — but the former Olympian is no less obsessed with her diet and fitness routine now than she was back when she was a competitive skater.

According to a recent interview with Elle, it appears Lipinski is all about promoting Gold Barre, a workout program constructed to give you that gold-medal body without actually lacing up a pair of skates.

Speaking on Gold Barre, the 33-year-old told Elle,

"I skated my whole life and had a training program laid out for me on a daily basis that kept me in shape. When that ended, I was always just looking for a workout that could keep the line in my body as strong as it did on the ice. You’re working the exact same muscles a skater does. You’ll definitely get a skater’s booty from this."

According to Elle, Lipinski works out roughly five days a week, doing barre and yoga and going for runs with her dog, Dublin.

In addition to her fitness routine, Lipinski is all about eating healthy and clean, which she says is quite an easy thing to do living in Santa Monica.

To start her day, Lipinski is into eggs, but she’ll occasionally go with bran cereal.

After that, one of Lipinski’s apparent go-to spots is Lemonade, a place that has a veggie bar with “10 different things, like broccoli, snow peas, chicken and beans.”

Another favorite of Lipinski’s is Tender Greens. But whether she eats out or cooks at home, she’s all about that salad game. Lipinski sticks to grilled chicken, grilled salmon, spinach and romaine. She’s also a big fan of sushi.

In terms of snacks, Lipinski favors smoothies, bananas and granola. But, don’t worry, she definitely isn’t above cheat days. We’re all human, right?

So, who’s ready to give the Lipinski lifestyle a try?

TARA LIPINSKI, JOHNNY WEIR BELIEVE HOME ICE COULD PROPEL U.S. SKATERS ONTO PODIUM
POSTED BY ANGIE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2015

Olympians Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir believe skating before a home crowd could help propel members of the United States team onto the podium at the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships, which will be held at Boston’s TD Garden March 28-April 3.

“I think that a great advantage for the American team is that this championship is happening in the United States,” said Weir, who will share the NBC broadcast booth in Boston with Lipinski, the 1998 Olympic women’s champion. “We saw it in the 2002 Olympics, with how well the American team did. We saw it at the 2009 world championships in Los Angeles, where Evan Lysacek won kind of a blinding world title.

“Should one of these skaters, one of these ladies, really skate perfectly and blow the roof off the building, the judges will be hard-pressed to go against the wishes of a pro-American audience, and I think that can lead to surprises in all of the disciplines.”

Lipinski sees the United States women as contenders for podium placements. The three U.S. women competing will all contend to end the 10-year medal drought. Kimme Meissner was the last U.S. woman to win a medal at worlds or the Olympics, when she took the world title in 2006.

“I think the American ladies are strong,” she said. “Gracie (Gold) and Ashley (Wagner) have the technical content. They’re doing the triple-triples. Someone like Gracie, skating clean, skating lights out, adding the emotion, selling a program – I think a medal is not just a maybe. It should be hers to lose.

“Obviously the Russians are strong,” she added. “The Japanese are strong. So everyone is going to put out their best, and it sometimes comes down to making a mistake. At the same time, I think our American team has a chance to be on the podium.”

“I think mainly both Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold certainly have a chance to ignite the audience,” said Weir, a two-time Olympian and 2008 world bronze medalist. “People often forget that the judges are the first row of the audience, and if the audience is feeling it, the judges will feel it, and up go the presentation and artistic scores.”

However, the challenge in front of the U.S. team is a formidable one, compounded by what Lipinski sees as an unusually high level of skating two years away from the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

“You hope that by the time you get to the Olympic year, skating is at its best,” she said. “We’re still quite a ways out from South Korea and the level that the skating is at now is just something that I’ve never really seen before. People are pushing the technical bar, and it’s just becoming more and more exciting.”

Both Lipinski and Weir believe the U.S. men face a significant challenge.

“It will be quite a distance to overcome,” said Weir. “If everyone skates their best, including the favorites – (Japan’s) Yuzuru Hanyu, (Canada’s) Patrick Chan, (Spain’s) Javier Fernandez, (China’s) Han Yan and Boyang Jin, (Japan’s) Shoma Uno, the list goes on and on. That really puts the United States men looking up at a top-10 finish almost as if it would be like winning a medal.”

Of the three men representing the United States, Lipinski looks to 2016 national champion Adam Rippon to carry the banner.

“I think Adam has the ability to hit that quad and blow the roof off,” she said. “When he does skate clean, he is electrifying, and, again, we’re in Boston, so this could be a great moment for him.

Another event that Weir suspects could be helped by the home ice advantage is ice dance.

“Should Maia and Alex Shibutani, with Boston roots and everything, really skate their amazing Coldplay free program, there could be an upset in dance,” he said. Boston is where Alex was born and where he and Maia earned their spot on the 2014 Olympic team with a bronze-medal finish at the U.S. championships.

While competing on home soil may give the American skaters a slight edge, it is no guarantee of a medal haul. At the 2009 worlds in Los Angeles, the last to be held in the United States, the U.S. team brought home two medals: Lysacek’s gold in men’s and a silver by Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto in ice dance.

TARA LIPINSI & JOHNNY WEIR READY FOR WORLDS AT GARDEN
POSTED BY ANGIE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2015

Skating’s broadcast beauties, Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski, are ready to glide in to Boston to ?cover the World Figure Skating Championships for NBC next week and they said the U.S. skaters will be at their best performing before a raucous TD Garden crowd on home ice.

“Historically, the U.S. skating teams perform very well when they’re at home,” Weir said during a conference call with the media yesterday. “That makes it very exciting for the skaters to know that the World Championships are in Boston, where the audience will certainly look out for the skaters, and for us as commentators, having to scream over a very loud audience. ... It’s really exciting.”

Lipinski said the American skaters have been thinking about the competition all year long, wondering, “What if I got to Worlds and could skate on home ice in Boston?’’

The ice yakkers, who are retired from the competition circuit, have been covering figure skating for NBC since the network teamed them up for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. They were such a hit, they took the act on the road to do fashion policing at the Kentucky Derby, to roam the red carpet at the Academy Awards, and to report for the Super Bowl XLIX pregame show.

Weir, who is known for his outlandish outfits both on and off the ice, said he has something special picked out to wear for the prime-time broadcast of the Ladies Free Skate at 9 p.m., April 2, on NBC.

“You’d best believe I’m bringing my best to Boston. It’s the Worlds,” he joked. “We really want to entertain people, and the clothes are really the smallest part of what we do. But we like to draw attention to our sport and to the real talent inside it, even if it is through our fashion.”

Tara confessed that the two discuss their outfits “weeks in advance.”

“We text back and forth. We send pictures,” she said. “We do like to match here and there, and like Johnny said, it is skating’s biggest event of the year, so you have to come prepared. So definitely we have a good outfit in the bag for prime time.”

As for the competition itself, both Tara and Johnny think the American women have a chance against tough competition from Russia and Japan.

“I think that the American ladies are strong,” Lipinski said. “Gracie (Gold) ... Ashley (Wagner), they have the technical content. They’re doing the triple triples. Someone like Gracie, skating clean, skating lights out, adding the emotion, selling a program, I think a medal is not just a maybe, it should be. It’s hers to lose.”

Not to mention the home-ice advantage.

“People often forget that the judges are the first row of the audience,” Weir pointed out, “and if the audience is feeling it, the judges will feel it, and up go the presentation and artistic scores.”

Although the duo said they love Boston, they don’t expect to have much time to get out and enjoy the city while they are here.

“We really are there for work,” Weir said. “But I do love Boston. I definitely will take a minute when I can get it and run over to Alan Bilzerian on Newbury Street. It’s my favorite shop in Boston.”

NBC’s broadcast of the World Figure Skating Championships begins at noon, March 30, on NBCSN.
