| "TURIN, ITALY - It's been eight years since Tara Lipinski won the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Games. And if figure skating were like most Olympic sports, her performance would have been left in the dust by the accomplishments of 21st-century athletes. But if you had popped a DVD of Lipinski's 1998 performance into the player Thursday night, clicked the remote and projected her image onto the Palavela's big screen for the judges, Lipinski probably would have been the most accomplished skater on the ice, and she certainly would have been the best in the air above it." "By the time she was 15, Tara Lipinski had reached the pinnacle in figure skating. She had won the U.S., world and Olympic championships. Now 23, she has turned her attention elsewhere. She recently landed a role in the TV series "Malcolm in the Middle." Lipinski told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "It was hard at the beginning because I think casting directors just saw a figure skater. I'd be like, `Come on, you have to see me act.' I'd push and push, and finally they'd let me in, and I would have to prove to them I could act." What about returning to the ice? "Yes, I could come back," she said. "But I won the nationals, I won the worlds, I won the Olympics. They were everything I wanted them to be. . . . I don't want to be `Skating With the Stars.' She was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame last month -- "I never really retired, so the Hall of Fame kind of slipped my mind," she says -- but since 1998, Lipinski, 23, has been working in TV. She lives in Santa Monica, Calif., with three dogs. |
