Time Out With Tara Lipinski
Interview
Transcript by Jill
Interviewer: Did you always know you were going to achieve greatness in figure skating?
Tara: I don't know, that's a hard question because you love it so much and you're out there and you always want to strive to be better and even when you are having a bad day and you don't feel that talented, you still know that if you work hard enough you can do anything. And I think from the very beginning I had this gut feeling that someday I was going to make a mark in skating and I would work my hardest to.
Do you ever wish that you could go outside and not be Tara Lipinski so people wouldn't recognize you?
Tara: Sometimes you get tired but I never wish that. If I did, I would feel that God would jinx me because he gave me so much and it comes along with that. And I would rather have that than not have an Olympic title. I'm thankful.
Interviewer: Who were people you looked up to as idols?
Tara: There wasn't like one person who inspired me to skate or anything, but there was people who I watched, and loved. You know, like Scott Hamilton. Anyone who went to the Olympics was an idol to me.
Interviewer: You have accomplished so much in your career, what do you want to do next?
Tara: Oh, there's lots of things. At the amateur level I felt I accomplished everything -- Nationals, Worlds, the Olympics -- you know, the best I could be at that group. Now as a professional, I need to climb up that ladder again and do the same thing and become an entertainer, performer. And also I like acting, so I would like to do some of that.
Interviewer: Go through with me the whole process of working with a choreographer.
Tara: Well, like with Leanne, I will go out there and we work together and we are like 'What do we want to do for the next program? What haven't we done?' And then we will like listen to music for hours and hours and hours and we'll go ah-ha and then all of a sudden one will just come on and you will be feeling it and you will be like 'This is the one. This is the one I want to do. It's different, it's fun. This is something that I would like to move to.' And you get excited about it. Then you'll take it on the ice and she'll give you moves and help you find you things that looks good on your body. You can just work together. It is a fun process. It is like creating something and when it is done, it is a great feeling.
